A combination of
geographical, historical and cultural factors has turned Lagos into
a tourism haven. The state is blessed with about 180 kilometres of
coastline most of which can be described as beaches. Among the major
beaches patronised by tourists are:
VICTORIA BEACH (BAR
BEACH)
The beach
lies parallel to the Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island. It is the
first recognised holiday resort in Nigeria. It is the most popular
beach to both foreign and local tourists despite its occasional
surge. The State government provides regular staffs who serve as
swimming guides as well as life guides. Facilities at the beach such
as beach tents, chairs and tables among other items are provided by
private operators.
LEKKI BEACH
It is situated at
Maiyegun Village in Eti - Osa Local Government Area. It is presently
one of the busiest of the beaches attracting more than three million
tourists yearly. It is noted for its musical jamborees. The beach
has good access road, car parks and facilities such as beach huts,
seats and large umbrellas. There is also a big podium for open air
performance.
ELEKO BEACH
It is located at Ibeju
Lekki local government area. It is about 65 kilometres from Lagos-
Maroko- Epe Express Road. It is presently the most sought after by
expatriates and rich Nigerians because of its cleanliness and
privacy. It has good facilities for accommodation, parking, beach
tents and chairs.
BADAGRY BEACH
It is a continuation
of the beaches from the Republic of Benin. It runs parallel to the
Lagos - Seine Road. There are also other recognised beaches located
in the area which are operated by private groups namely: Ocean -
Views Plaza, Atlantic Beach -Resort - Sapo Beach and Airoji Beaches.
They are not as popular as those located in Lagos because of the
distance.
Located on Victoria Island, Tarkwa Bay is owned by the Nigerian
Ports Authority. The only access to the beach is through the lagoon.
Water transportation to Tarkwa Bay is provided by the following
companies: Paradise Holiday Inn, Eleke Crescent, Victoria Island;
