Lagos State seeks to boost tourism by creating an environment in Nigeria's premier state that is welcoming and comfortable for visitors.

A combination of geographical, historical and cultural factors has turned Lagos into a tourism haven. The state is blessed with about 180 kilometres of coastline most of which can be described as beaches. Among the major beaches patronised by tourists are:

VICTORIA BEACH (BAR BEACH)

Bar Beach, LagosThe beach lies parallel to the Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island. It is the first recognised holiday resort in Nigeria. It is the most popular beach to both foreign and local tourists despite its occasional surge. The State government provides regular staffs who serve as swimming guides as well as life guides. Facilities at the beach such as beach tents, chairs and tables among other items are provided by private operators.

 

LEKKI BEACH

It is situated at Maiyegun Village in Eti - Osa Local Government Area. It is presently one of the busiest of the beaches attracting more than three million tourists yearly. It is noted for its musical jamborees. The beach has good access road, car parks and facilities such as beach huts, seats and large umbrellas. There is also a big podium for open air performance.

 

ELEKO BEACH

It is located at Ibeju Lekki local government area. It is about 65 kilometres from Lagos- Maroko- Epe Express Road. It is presently the most sought after by expatriates and rich Nigerians because of its cleanliness and privacy. It has good facilities for accommodation, parking, beach tents and chairs.

BADAGRY BEACH

Suntan Beach, Badagry, LagosIt is a continuation of the beaches from the Republic of Benin. It runs parallel to the Lagos - Seine Road. There are also other recognised beaches located in the area which are operated by private groups namely: Ocean - Views Plaza, Atlantic Beach -Resort - Sapo Beach and Airoji Beaches. They are not as popular as those located in Lagos because of the distance.

Located on Victoria Island, Tarkwa Bay is owned by the Nigerian Ports Authority. The only access to the beach is through the lagoon. Water transportation to Tarkwa Bay is provided by the following companies: Paradise Holiday Inn, Eleke Crescent, Victoria Island; Tarzan Boat Transportation, Maroko Foreshore; Fiki Bal Enterprises, Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, Victoria Island; McEwen Jetty, Victoria Island and Motor Boat Club, Awolowo Road, Ikoyi.
